This is really cool Although, out of morbid curiosity, I decided to look this song up on Youtube and now about two different versions of it are stuck in my head LOL!!!
This song also kind of inspired me to do a hearse-themed drawing too, although it's more comedic (and includes a modern rather than an old hearse) [link]. I've mentioned this rather indirect inspiration and your amazing drawing in the description, but is it ok if I add a link in the description too?
But thanks for introducing me to this wonderful song too
I love hearing the different lyric variations. My mother used to sing a different version to me as a child. When researching for this illustration, I was amazed at just how many different versions of the lyrics there were.
I memorized the version I read a looong time ago! I used to sing it all the time!
This is the version I remember:
If you ever see a hearse go by Then you may be the next to die They wrap you in a big white sheet From your head down to your feet They put you in a big black box And cover you up with dirt and rocks All goes well for about a week Then your coffin begins to leak The worms crawl in the worms crawl out The worms play pinnacle on your snout They eat your eyes they eat your nose They eat the jelly between your toes A big green worm with rolling eyes Crawls in your stomach and out your eyes Your stomach turns a slimey green And puss pours out like whipping cream You spread it on a slice of bread And thats what you eat when you are dead!!
I'll chip in the variation I learned: Did you ever think, when the hearse goes by, that you may be the next to die? They wrap you up in a big white sheet and throw you down about thirty feet. You're alright for about a week until the coffin starts to leak! The worms crawl in, the worms crawl out, in through your gizzard and out your snout!
Love it. The way I heard it was: If you should see a hearse go by Then you may be the next to die. They'll wrap you up in a big white sheet, And send you under six feet deep. Then you will turn a ghastly green, And pus will come out like whipping cream ...Won't you wish you had a spoooooon?!
Thanks! I must say, that didn't sound too creepy, and you obviously left out some lyrics, so I think your picture was better than the song itself, especially since it seemed like you added it a line of your own that went with it rather well. XD
